The Oudheidkamer is located in one of the oldest houses on Texel, built in 1599. There are no large display cases or modern displays here, but a cosy interior where it seems as if the residents could walk in at any moment. From a box bed to an old-fashioned kitchen cupboard full of copper pots and pans: every detail breathes history.
Each room tells its own story from that time and step by step you discover more and more about island life in the past. How did a family on Texel live in the 18th century? How did they cook without electricity? And what was on the menu?
The Oudheidkamer is like a time machine: you imagine yourself in the middle of the 18th century!
In addition to the atmospheric interior and historical artefacts, the Oudheidkamer has a beautiful herb garden. All kinds of medicinal herbs that were used in the past to fight ailments grow here. A peaceful spot in the middle of Den Burg!
Would you like to experience Texel in a different way? Then a visit to the Oudheidkamer is highly recommended. This charming museum proves that history is anything but boring, especially when you can literally touch it!
